PhD Position To Investigate Innovative Government - Scholarship

Overview
You are invited to apply for a PhD position to investigate innovative government approaches to the development and/or redevelopment of sustainable business locations. The PhD research is part of a joint research project of Utrecht University and Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen and fits in a new research programme called Climate Proof Cities (part of the Knowledge for Climate Programme).
As a PhD researcher you will be part of a joint research team led by Prof. T. Spit (Utrecht University) and Dr. E. Van der Krabben (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen). The position will be available in the Nijmegen School of Management at Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands). You may, however, work part-time in Utrecht as well.

Requirements
You are required to have a relevant Master’s degree in Spatial Planning or a related discipline. You are expected to have a strong interest in sustainability issues and location development and redevelopment processes. An excellent command of written and spoken Dutch is mandatory (since Dutch cities will participate in the project). Publications, however, will be mainly in English.
Organization
This position is located within the Governance and Places research group, which is one of three research groups within the Institute for Management Research of the Nijmegen School of Management. Additionally, there will be strong links with the spatial planning research group of Utrecht University.

Conditions of employment
Employment: 1,0 fte
Maximum salary per month, based on a fulltime employment: € 2,612 gross/month
The starting salary is €2,042 per month and will increase to €2,612 per month in the fourth year.
Duration of the contract: 4 years.
Additional conditions of employment
You will be appointed conditionally as a PhD researcher (1.0 FTE) for a period of 18 months. Your performance will be evaluated after 12 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended for the remainder of the period.

PhD,MA Scholarships at The University of Kent

The University of Kent at Brussels awards three full-time doctoral research scholarships and seven annual taught Masters scholarships.
PhD Scholarships
Funding for doctoral research scholarships is available for one year in the first instance, extended to a maximum of three years, based on satisfactory progress. Successful candidates will be registered as full-time students of the University of Kent; registered initially for the MPhil they will be expected to transfer/upgrade to the PhD within 18 months of registration.
Candidates will receive a maintenance grant of €9000 p.a. and tuition fees (€13,690). As part of their programme of study, scholarship holders will normally be expected to teach a maximum of 6 hours per week in term time, at the direction of the Dean. Candidates will be subject to an annual review of progress and performance in both research and teaching and will be expected to perform at a satisfactory level in both areas to ensure renewal of their award.
Successful applicants will pursue a thesis topic in an area of research strength of the school. We particularly welcome research proposals in European Public Policy, International Relations, International Conflict Analysis, International Law, International Political Economy, and Political Strategy and Communication. Applicants should normally have obtained, or be about to obtain a relevant Master’s degree at merit or distinction level. These scholarships are open to students of all nationalities.

This application should be followed by a research proposal, CV, covering letter and two academic references.
MA Scholarships
Applications are invited for two scholarships for politics students starting in January. Successful candidates will be registered at the University of Kent as full time students on one of the five politics programmes offered at UKB (listed below) and will receive payment to cover 50% of their tuition fees (€6845). As such, the university must receive the candidate’s complete application to the program of their choice, together with supporting documents, no later than the closing date of 15 October. These scholarships are open to students of all nationalities.
The scholarships are valid for the following programmes:

  • MA in International Conflict Analysis
  • MA in International Political Economy
  • MA in European Public PolicyMA in Political Strategy and Communication

Applicants should normally have obtained, or be about to obtain, a relevant undergraduate degree at least at First or Upper Second Class Honours level or equivalent.

Once you have submitted your application to study at UKB (with all the required documentation), you should send a letter/email to ukbschols2@kent.ac.uk confirming your wish to be considered for a scholarship and explaining why you believe you should be awarded one. To help you decide what to write you should be aware that the Scholarships Board is looking for academic excellence as well as academic potential. If it helps, imagine that you are standing in front of the members of the Board and have one chance to tell them about yourself and why you want the scholarship.
